I went out in one the other day, and I was blown away with how tranquil it was. My mom and dad loved to canoe before they had us kids, so I was thinking that a fiberglass or plastic canoe would be a good way to spend some quality time. Any canoe owners on Oppo?

Had one when I was a kid, thinking of getting a kayak. Love just killing time on a lake relaxing and fishing.

Yep, we’ve got one just like that. Easy to transport, wasn’t too expensive, gets the tranquility done, son. Not quite as tranquil as the battered sailboat we have, but getting there.

Indeed.

Yeah. I would really like a kayak, but i’d prefer to take the family with me.

I’ve got a tandem kayak.
They are definitely tranquil.

Tandem kayaks are cool, I just need something that seats four.
![]() 08/11/2015 at 12:48 |

well there goes the tranquility

Sadly, you’re probably right.

2 tandem kayaks?
Just kidding. But I hope at least some of those 4 are on the small side. Too many adults and a canoe gets tippy. Even when they don’t mean it to be.

Buy a canoe. Go gunwale bobbing with your friends.

My father in law has a 18’ old town. He likes it. I will likely get one when kids are older. the kids caNt swim yet so it’ll be a few years. Check CL for something used.

You ever sacked yourself with an entire canoe?
At least it’s safer than using kayaks for Piano Keys.

Admit it, you do.

A friend accidentally sacked me with a putter, so being sacked with a canoe sounds not that painful.

I shall.

Yeah, buy something nicer than shittier. If you can find an old grumman aluminum get it should be <$500. I have a 17’ We-no-na and it’s a huge tripping boat. We put 4 people in it with a cooler easily. Generally the good brands are Mad River, We-no-na, and old town. here is a good example. Stay away from coleman, they are shit.

Aluminum would look good and be more durable.

do it! Canoes are one of the most rewarding purchases I ever made. even if i only owned it for a few months. I miss my boat.

Four people gets less tranquil. I had a three man kayak for diving, gear in one seat.

Yeah, but I want to take the family. Something tells me that this will end up being like National Lampoon’s Vacation, but on water.

Coordinated paddling can be tough with some people. You can get rudders or small, quiet electric motors for when you need it! I took my wife and friends river rafting, with the dogs and in the calm water it was even hard to get them to paddle correctly (not the dogs). I grew up partly in Hawaii so I know about paddling kayaks, never had a canoe, it’s probably a little bit harder to move.

Canoes are for chumps. Kayaks are where its at.
![]() 08/11/2015 at 13:22 |

Yep, we’ve got almost the exact one pictured. We rarely use it as it’s cumbersome to transport, at least moreso than the kayaks we’ve got. I do love being out on the water though, kayak, canoe or otherwise.

I’ve got one I’m looking to sell... in NH...
![]() 08/11/2015 at 13:35 |

hell yeah! Buy it man! but if you can get either fiber glass or metal. plastic canoes flex, a lot.
![]() 08/11/2015 at 13:47 |

Canoes are slightly easier than kayaks to move, you just need the people to paddle equally on opposite sides of the boat.
![]() 08/11/2015 at 13:48 |

Well then, call me a chump!

Hey, DasWauto! Aren’t you around Mount Forest? If you’re not doing anything Sunday morning, do you want to come down to Rockwood for a mini oppo meet (you, TheVancen, and I)?
![]() 08/11/2015 at 15:01 |
|
Grumman’s are excellent flat water boats, they are a bit heavy but paddle and track well. Thy are also designed to carry a lot of weight so they take the weight well. Durability wise you don’t want to scrape it on sharp rocks but otherwise it should last for a very long time.
![]() 08/11/2015 at 15:03 |

Well designed poly boats from name brand mfr’s like Mad River and Wenoona aren’t nearly as flexy as a colman. I swear I have nearly died 12 times over in a colman on a lake with whitecaps. The whole boat was noodling at least 1-2 feet from bow to stern.

Yeah, Mount Forest is about 30 min west of me. Unfortunately I work (almost) every Sunday morning on the farm so I doubt I can make it. I was happy and lucky enough to be able to take this last Sunday off to go autocross but I can’t really do that 2 weeks in a row. Some other time maybe.

Wait until you move! Canada Post would need like, at least $1.50 in stamps to ship that. And the west coast hippies probably have tons of them for sale. They love eating granola and communing with nature n shit.

Not a canoe, but kayak for me. I’ve been into kayaking for a long time, but haven’t ever had my own until a couple months ago. It’s so much fun. And there’s so much water around me I can pick a different lake/section of creek every time I go out and never get bored. I have a bunch of friends that I go with and it’s a good time. Of course, it’s all different tastes for different people. I’ve been on canoes multiple times, but I just prefer how much simpler it is to be by myself in my own boat. It all just depends on your personal interests and what you would like to have feature-wise in a boat.
